Chemical Water Treatment: How to Use Iodine and Chlorine to Purify Water

When you can't boil water and don't have a filter on hand, chemical treatment is your most reliable backup. Iodine and chlorine have been used for over a century to make water safe to drink — by militaries, aid organizations, and backcountry travelers worldwide. Understanding how to use them correctly is a core preparedness skill.

How Chemical Treatment Works

Both iodine and chlorine are oxidizing agents. They work by chemically disrupting the cellular structure of bacteria and viruses, rendering them unable to reproduce or cause infection. When used at the correct concentration and given adequate contact time, they are highly effective against most biological threats in water.

Neither iodine nor chlorine is a complete solution on its own — but as part of a layered purification approach, they are fast, lightweight, and require no equipment beyond a container and a timer.

Chlorine Treatment

Chlorine is the most widely used chemical water treatment method in the world. For emergency use, unscented liquid household bleach (sodium hypochlorite) is the most accessible source.

What to use: Unscented liquid chlorine bleach, 6–8.25% sodium hypochlorite. Do not use scented bleach, color-safe bleach, or bleach with added cleaners.

Dosage: 8 drops per gallon of clear water, 16 drops per gallon of cloudy water.

Tablet dosage: Follow manufacturer instructions — typically 1 tablet per quart of clear water, 2 tablets for cloudy water. Wait 30 minutes before drinking (60 minutes for cold or cloudy water).

For home emergency storage, chlorine bleach is the practical choice — inexpensive, widely available, and effective. For go-bags and portable kits, iodine tablets win on weight and shelf life.

Critical Rule: Pre-Filter Before You Treat

Chemical treatment is significantly less effective in turbid (cloudy) water. Suspended particles physically shield microorganisms from the disinfectant. Always pre-filter through a cloth, coffee filter, or improvised sediment filter before applying chemical treatment. If the water is too murky to see through a 1-inch depth, double your chemical dose and extend contact time.

What Chemical Treatment Cannot Do

  • Does not remove heavy metals, pesticides, fuel, or industrial chemicals
  • Does not remove sediment or improve taste beyond the chemical itself
  • Not effective against Cryptosporidium at standard doses
  • Does not make radiologically contaminated water safe

For complete protection, combine chemical treatment with a mechanical filter that includes activated carbon.
