Emergency Water Sources Around Your Home (And How to Make Them Safe)

Your tap just stopped working. You have no stored water. Here's where to look — and exactly how to make what you find safe to drink.

Most preparedness content assumes you've already built a water reserve. This article is for the moment when you haven't — or when your reserve runs out and the disruption continues.

The good news: most homes contain more usable water than people realize. The better news: with the right knowledge, most of it can be made safe to drink. The critical point: knowing this before an emergency is what makes it useful.

Source 1: Your Hot Water Heater

Capacity: 30–80 gallons | Quality: Generally good — same water as your tap, stored in a tank

This is the most overlooked emergency water source in most homes, and it's often the best one. A standard 40–50 gallon hot water heater contains enough water to sustain a family of four for several days at minimum consumption.

How to Access It

  1. Turn off the power or gas to the heater. Electric: flip the breaker. Gas: turn the gas valve to pilot position.
  2. Turn off the cold water supply valve at the top of the heater.
  3. Open a hot water faucet somewhere in the house to break the vacuum.
  4. Connect a hose to the drain valve at the bottom, or place a container under it. Open the drain valve.
  5. Let the first water run until it clears, or filter before use.

Treatment: Generally safe without additional treatment if your municipal supply was safe before the disruption. If flooding or contamination is possible, filter and disinfect before drinking. Sediment may be present — let it settle, decant the clear water, and filter.

Source 2: Your Toilet Tank (Not the Bowl)

Capacity: 1.5–3 gallons | Quality: Generally clean — same supply water as your pipes

The toilet tank — not the bowl — contains fresh supply water. Unless you use tank cleaning tablets (the blue or colored ones), this water is essentially the same as tap water.

Remove the tank lid and use a cup or container to scoop water out. If tank tablets have been used: do not use this water for drinking. The chemical additives are not safe for consumption.

Source 3: Water in Your Pipes

Capacity: 1–3 gallons | Quality: Same as your tap water at the time of disruption

When water pressure drops or supply is cut, water remains in your home's pipes. Access it by opening the lowest faucet in the house while opening a faucet at the highest point to allow air in. Water will drain out by gravity — collect it.

Source 4: Your Swimming Pool or Hot Tub

Capacity: Pools: 10,000–20,000+ gallons. Hot tubs: 300–500 gallons | Quality: Chemically treated — not immediately potable, but treatable

Pool water contains chlorine, algaecides, and pH adjusters. It is not safe to drink without treatment, but it is a substantial source that can be made usable.

For a well-maintained, clear pool: Filter through a hollow fiber or ceramic filter → activated carbon filtration → boiling or UV treatment for drinking. Safe for non-potable use (toilet flushing, washing) without treatment.

For a pool with visible algae or heavy chemical treatment: Sediment filter → hollow fiber filter → activated carbon → boiling.

Prioritize pool water for non-potable use first. This extends your drinkable water reserve significantly.

Source 5: Rainwater

Capacity: Depends on rainfall | Quality: Relatively clean but not sterile

Even without a rain barrel system, collect rainwater during an emergency using any available container — buckets, pots, tarps, trash cans. For direct rainfall collection: filter to remove particulates, then disinfect. For roof-collected rainwater: discard the first flow, sediment filter, hollow fiber filter, then disinfect.

Source 6: Natural Water Sources Near Your Home

Capacity: Essentially unlimited | Quality: Unknown — assume contaminated

Natural water sources should be treated as contaminated regardless of how clean they appear. Clear water can contain Giardia, Cryptosporidium, bacteria, and other pathogens invisible to the naked eye.

Treatment — non-negotiable steps:

  1. Sediment pre-filter: Filter through cloth, a bandana, or coffee filter to remove large particulates
  2. Hollow fiber or ceramic filter: Removes protozoa and bacteria
  3. Disinfection: Boiling (one minute rolling boil) or chemical treatment — addresses viruses that filters miss

Do not skip disinfection for natural water sources, even after filtering.

Better sources: Fast-moving streams above human habitation, springs emerging from the ground, rainwater collected away from contamination. More concerning: Stagnant water, water downstream of agricultural or industrial areas, water with visible algae blooms.

Source 7: Ice and Snow

Freezer ice: Made from your tap water — melt and use. No additional treatment needed if your supply was safe.

Outdoor snow: Generally clean when it falls but accumulates contaminants from the atmosphere and ground. Melt and filter before drinking. Avoid snow near roads.

Important: Never eat snow or ice directly to hydrate. Your body expends more energy warming it than you gain from the water, and it can lower your core temperature.

Source 8: Canned Goods and Food

The liquid in canned vegetables, beans, fruit, and soups is water-based and safe to consume. In a genuine water shortage, don't discard it. A typical pantry may contain a gallon or more of usable liquid — a meaningful supplement that reduces your drinking water demand.
