What This Filter Does — and Doesn’t Do

A DIY filter is a pre-treatment step, not a complete purification system. After filtering, always disinfect with boiling, chemical treatment, or UV light before drinking. The filter makes disinfection more effective by removing the particles that shield microorganisms from heat and chemicals.

What You Need
Container options (pick one): A 2-liter plastic bottle, a large tin can, a plastic bucket with a hole in the bottom, a cloth bag or sock tied at the bottom, or bamboo/hollow log section for true field improvisation.
Filtering media — layer from top to bottom:
- Layer 1 — Coarse pre-filter: grass, small pebbles, or crumpled cloth
- Layer 2 — Fine gravel or small stones
- Layer 3 — Coarse sand
- Layer 4 — Fine sand
- Layer 5 — Activated charcoal or crushed charcoal (the most important layer)
- Layer 6 — Fine cloth or coffee filter at the outlet
Where to Find Filtering Media When You Have Nothing
Sand: Riverbanks, creek beds, beaches, children’s sandboxes, bags of play sand from hardware stores.
Gravel: Driveways, riverbeds, landscaping areas, aquarium gravel.
Charcoal: The most critical material — and the most improvised.
Making Charcoal in the Field
If you have no activated charcoal, you can make functional charcoal from wood:
- Build a small fire and burn hardwood (oak, hickory, maple — avoid softwoods and treated wood) until it produces glowing coals
- Allow the coals to cool completely
- Crush the cooled charcoal into small pieces — roughly pea-sized or smaller
- Do not use ash — only the solid black charcoal pieces
- Rinse the crushed charcoal with clean water before adding to your filter to remove fine dust
Field-made charcoal is less effective than commercial activated charcoal but significantly better than none at all.
Build 1: The 2-Liter Bottle Filter

- Cut the bottom off a 2-liter plastic bottle — this becomes the top opening where water enters
- Poke 5–8 small holes in the bottle cap, or cover the cap opening with a double layer of cloth secured with a rubber band
- Turn the bottle upside down so the cap end faces down — this is your outlet
- Layer your filtering media from bottom (outlet end) to top (inlet end): fine cloth against the outlet holes, 2–3 inches of fine sand, 2–3 inches of coarse sand, 2–3 inches of crushed charcoal, 2–3 inches of fine gravel, 2–3 inches of coarse gravel, and a layer of grass or coarse cloth at the very top
- Suspend the bottle over a clean collection container
- Pour source water slowly into the top
- Discard the first two passes of water — this flushes fine particles and charcoal dust from the filter
- The water coming out should be visibly clearer than what went in — if not, run it through again
Flow rate: approximately 1 liter per 15–20 minutes. Slow is normal and indicates the filter is working.
Build 2: The Bucket Filter

- Drill or punch 8–10 small holes in the bottom of a 5-gallon bucket
- Line the bottom with a double layer of cloth or coffee filters
- Layer filtering media in the same order as the bottle filter — scaled up to fill the bucket
- Place the bucket on an elevated surface over a clean collection container
- Pour source water in from the top
- Collect and discard the first full bucket of output before using for drinking
A bucket filter produces approximately 3–5 liters per hour and can be cleaned and reused indefinitely by replacing the filtering media when flow rate drops.
Build 3: The Improvised Field Filter (No Container)
- Cut a section of green bamboo approximately 18 inches long, or use a large hollow log section
- Pack the interior tightly with alternating layers of grass, sand, charcoal, and more grass
- Allow water to drip through from one end into a collection vessel
- Always disinfect output before drinking
This is a survival-tier option — low output, but buildable from pure natural materials with no tools.
Maintaining and Reusing Your DIY Filter
- When flow rate slows significantly, replace the sand and gravel layers
- Charcoal can be refreshed by heating in a fire until it glows, then cooling and rinsing
- Never let the filter sit wet and unused for more than 24 hours without flushing — biological growth can occur in the media
- If unused for several days, run two full passes of water through before using output for drinking
The Complete System: Filter + Disinfect
After filtering, always disinfect. Boiling kills bacteria, viruses, and protozoa and requires only a heat source and container. Chlorine bleach handles bacteria and most viruses with just a dropper and unscented bleach. Iodine tablets cover bacteria, viruses, and Giardia.
