How to Build a Rainwater Collection System for Emergency Water Storage

Rainwater collection is one of the most practical and resourceful water preparedness strategies available to a homeowner. Rain falls for free, requires no municipal infrastructure, and with the right collection and storage setup, can provide a meaningful supplemental water supply for drinking, cooking, and sanitation during an extended emergency.

This project walks you through building a functional rainwater collection system from components available at most hardware stores — from a basic barrel setup to a more capable multi-barrel system.

Understanding Rainwater as a Water Source

Collected rainwater is not automatically safe to drink. Before it reaches your collection system, rainwater picks up contaminants from the atmosphere, your roof surface, and your gutters — including bird and animal droppings, dust, pollen, debris, and chemical residue from roofing materials.

First-flush diverters — which automatically discard the first flow of water from each rain event — significantly reduce contamination before water enters your storage tank. All collected rainwater intended for drinking should be filtered and purified before consumption.

Legal Considerations

Rainwater collection regulations vary by state. Most U.S. states permit residential rainwater collection for personal use. A small number of states have restrictions on collection volume or require permits for larger systems. Check your state and local regulations before building a large-scale system.

System Components

  • Catchment surface — your roof; metal roofing and clay tile are the cleanest surfaces; asphalt shingles are acceptable but introduce more chemical residue
  • Gutters and downspouts — channel water from the roof to the collection point; keep clean and free of debris
  • Leaf guard or gutter screen — prevents large debris from entering the system
  • First-flush diverter — diverts and discards the first 10–20 gallons of each rain event
  • Inlet screen — fine mesh screen at the tank inlet to block insects and fine debris
  • Storage tank — food-grade barrel, IBC tote, or purpose-built rainwater tank
  • Overflow outlet — directs excess water away from the foundation when the tank is full
  • Spigot or pump — for dispensing water from the tank
  • Filtration and purification — for any water intended for drinking

Project 1A: Basic Single-Barrel System

Materials needed: 1 food-grade 55-gallon barrel, 1 first-flush diverter kit, 1 food-grade spigot with washer and nut, 1 piece of fine mesh screen, 1 downspout diverter fitting, PVC pipe and fittings, cinder blocks or a sturdy platform, a drill with hole saw attachment, Teflon tape.

  1. Position the barrel — Place it on cinder blocks or a platform directly below a downspout. Elevation allows gravity-fed dispensing and increases water pressure.
  2. Install the spigot — Drill a hole near the bottom of the barrel sized for your spigot fitting. Insert the spigot with its washer on the inside; tighten the nut firmly. Wrap threads with Teflon tape before assembly to prevent leaks.
  3. Install the overflow outlet — Drill a hole near the top of the barrel for an overflow fitting. Connect a short length of hose or pipe to direct overflow to a safe drainage area away from your foundation.
  4. Prepare the inlet — Cut or drill an opening in the barrel lid or top for the inlet pipe. Cover with fine mesh screen secured with a hose clamp or zip ties to block insects and debris.
  5. Install the first-flush diverter — Connect the diverter to your downspout using the diverter fitting. The diverter automatically fills a standpipe with the first flow of water from each rain event, then diverts cleaner subsequent flow to your barrel.
  6. Connect the downspout to the barrel — Run PVC pipe from the diverter outlet to the barrel inlet. Ensure the pipe slopes downward toward the barrel for proper flow. Seal all connections.
  7. Test the system — Run a garden hose into the gutter above to simulate rain. Check all connections for leaks, verify the first-flush diverter fills and diverts correctly, and confirm overflow exits properly when the barrel is full.

Project 1B: Multi-Barrel Linked System

For greater storage capacity, multiple barrels can be linked in series — each barrel filling before overflow passes to the next.

Additional materials needed per barrel: 1 additional food-grade 55-gallon barrel, 1 bulkhead fitting, PVC pipe and fittings for the linking connection.

  1. Position additional barrels at the same height as the first barrel
  2. Drill a hole near the top of the first barrel and near the top of the second barrel at the same height
  3. Install bulkhead fittings in both holes
  4. Connect with a short length of PVC pipe — water will flow from the first barrel to the second when it reaches the linking height
  5. Install an overflow outlet on the last barrel in the series
  6. Only the first barrel needs the downspout connection and first-flush diverter

A two-barrel system provides 110 gallons of storage. Four barrels provide 220 gallons — enough to supply one person’s drinking water needs for approximately 110 days at the FEMA-recommended 2 liters per day.

Maintenance

  • Clean gutters and leaf guards before rainy season and after major storms
  • Inspect and empty the first-flush diverter standpipe periodically — it accumulates sediment
  • Clean the inlet screen monthly during active collection periods
  • Inspect the barrel interior annually — scrub with a dilute bleach solution (1 tablespoon per gallon of water), rinse thoroughly, and allow to dry before refilling
  • Check all fittings and connections for leaks each season
  • In freezing climates, drain barrels before the first hard freeze to prevent cracking

Treating Collected Rainwater for Drinking

All collected rainwater for drinking should go through:

  1. Sediment pre-filter — cloth or gravity filter to remove particulates
  2. Primary filtration — ceramic or hollow fiber filter to remove biological contaminants
  3. Disinfection — boiling, UV treatment, or chemical treatment to address viruses and remaining bacteria

With this treatment sequence, collected rainwater from a clean roof surface is a reliable drinking water source.
