A rain barrel is a great start. But if your goal is a meaningful long-term water reserve — one that gives your household genuine resilience through extended dry periods, infrastructure disruptions, or seasonal water shortages — you need to think beyond collection and into long-term storage.
Long-term rainwater storage introduces challenges that short-term collection doesn't: biological growth, chemical degradation, container integrity, and in some states, legal limits on quantity. This guide covers all of it.
Is Long-Term Rainwater Storage Legal Where You Live?
Before building a large system, check your state's regulations. Rainwater collection law varies significantly across the U.S.
Most states: No restrictions or minimal restrictions on residential rainwater collection. Many actively encourage it.
Some western states: Historically restricted collection due to water rights law. Colorado now allows limited residential collection. Utah allows collection up to 200 gallons. Arizona and Texas actively encourage it with tax incentives.
The practical guidance: Look up your state's current rainwater harvesting regulations before investing in a large system. Laws have been changing in favor of collection in recent years, but limits on quantity or use may apply.
The Long-Term Storage Challenge
Short-term storage is relatively forgiving. Long-term storage introduces several issues that need to be actively managed:
- Biological growth: Algae, bacteria, and mosquito larvae thrive in standing water exposed to light and warmth.
- Chemical degradation: Chlorine added to municipal water dissipates over time, losing its disinfection protection within months.
- Container degradation: UV exposure degrades plastic containers over time, potentially leaching chemicals into stored water.
- Sediment accumulation: Particulates settle at the bottom of storage containers and can harbor bacteria.
- Evaporation and contamination entry: Improperly sealed containers lose water and allow contamination in.
Choosing the Right Long-Term Storage Container
Food-grade polyethylene (HDPE #2): The standard for water storage. Durable, doesn't leach chemicals under normal conditions. Look for containers specifically rated for potable water storage.
Opaque containers: Light promotes algae growth. Dark-colored or opaque containers significantly reduce biological growth. If your container is translucent, store it in a dark location.
UV-stabilized plastic: If containers will be exposed to sunlight, UV-stabilized polyethylene resists degradation better than standard plastic.
Stainless steel: Excellent for long-term storage — doesn't degrade, doesn't leach, doesn't promote biological growth. More expensive but essentially indefinite lifespan.
Avoid: Clear plastic in light-exposed locations, containers previously used for non-food substances, containers with unknown plastic composition.
Treatment for Long-Term Storage
Water going into long-term storage needs to be treated. Before storing collected rainwater:
Step 1 — First-flush diversion: Discard the first flow from each rain event. This carries the highest concentration of roof contaminants. A first-flush diverter does this automatically.
Step 2 — Sediment filtration: Pass water through a mesh or sediment filter before it enters storage. Removes particulates that would otherwise accumulate and harbor bacteria.
Step 3 — Disinfection: Add unscented liquid chlorine bleach (6–8.25% sodium hypochlorite) at 8 drops per gallon of clear water before sealing.
Step 4 — Seal completely: Airtight lids prevent evaporation, contamination entry, and mosquito access.
Maintaining Treatment Over Time
Chlorine dissipates within 6–12 months. For storage beyond 6 months, re-treat with bleach at the 6-month mark, or plan to filter and disinfect again before use. The simplest approach: treat when you store it, label it with the date, and plan to filter and disinfect again before drinking regardless of storage duration.
Long-Term Storage Containers by Scale
5–7 Gallon Containers: Best for modular household storage, easy rotation, portability. Rotate every 6–12 months.
55-Gallon Barrels: Higher-capacity fixed storage. Requires a hand pump or siphon to draw water. Heavy when full (~460 lbs) — position before filling. Clean annually, inspect seals.
IBC Totes (275–330 gallons): Serious long-term reserves. Used food-grade totes are cost-effective but require thorough cleaning. Inspect the cage for rust. Cover from UV exposure.
Underground Cisterns (500–10,000+ gallons): Permanent large-scale systems. Stable temperature reduces biological growth. Requires a pump to access water. Professional installation recommended for large systems.
Preventing Biological Growth
- Keep it dark: Opaque containers in dark storage locations dramatically reduce algae growth
- Keep it cool: Biological growth accelerates with heat; a cool basement maintains lower temperatures year-round
- Keep it sealed: Airtight lids prevent contamination entry and mosquito access
- Maintain chlorine residual: Re-treat at 6-month intervals for long-term storage
- Clean containers annually: Dilute bleach solution (1 tablespoon per gallon), thorough rinse
Rotation and Inspection Schedule
Making Long-Term Stored Rainwater Potable
Regardless of how well you've stored it, treat rainwater before drinking it. Minimum treatment before drinking:
- Sediment filter — remove any particulates
- Quality hollow fiber or ceramic filter — remove biological contaminants
- Chemical disinfection or boiling — address any remaining biological threats
